About Geddes Productions

Having a child diagnosed with multiple special needs, we struggled to find appropriate Down Syndrome software or autism software. Failing to find what we sought, eight years ago we began writing our own software. This began a journey from which our company was born.
Philosophy of our software:
Our software is a family venture. If our youngest child, Kevin, had not been born with Down Syndrome (he was later also diagnosed as having autism), Geddes Productions software would not be in existence. We began writing software to assist his development, initially to assist his spoken language and then his written language and then to develop other skills. Others started to request our software for their children, teachers in New Zealand schools asked us to develop it further and so we had to move to a commercial basis to make this possible, though we now run as not-for-profit (see below).
Although the primary programmer is Kevin's dad (in his spare time), over the years all the family have been involved in the production of our software in some way. Above all the software has been developed from many hours spent assisting the development of our son, and working with professionals in the special education field.
Some of the concepts for our software have come from outside the family. For example, Alice Castelano from New York came up with the original concept for Flashcards and contacted us and asked if we could write the software, She assisted us with the development of the US version providing sounds and correcting spelling. Teachers involved in education of children with special needs have provided many useful suggestions. StoryMaker was in part developed as a result of suggestion by Judy Black, a teacher involved with children with special needs in Dunedin, New Zealand. However with all our software development our priority has always been to produce software that will assist the development of our youngest son.
We aim to keep the charges for our software as low as we can to enable families with children with special needs to purchase our programs.
We gladly make it available to others with the desire that it will prove a blessing to them. We would love to hear from you concerning your experiences with the software, especially from those of you who also have the privilege of having children with special needs.
Not for profit:
We reconfigured our company to run on a not for profit basis in September 2007.
No salaries are (or have ever been) paid in our company. Proceeds of our sales go first to servicing running costs which includes software and hardware necessary to produce our software, materials, transport, advertising and maintaing our web page and shopping cart.
Any profit we make will be given to a registered New Zealand charity of our choosing.
